J.S.A. SAKE DIPLOMA INTERNATIONAL is an international qualification for sake and shochu certified by the Japan Sommelier Association (J.S.A.) , which aims to contribute to the improvement of global food and beverage culture based on wine. While UNESCO’s recognition of washoku as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013 has sparked an international rise in the popularity of Japanese food culture, this diploma was launched in 2018 to certify persons who can provide information on sake and shochu to people all over the world who are interested in them. The examinations are all in English. Anyone at the age 20 or over at the time of the record date of examinations set by J.S.A. are eligible to take examinations regardless of nationality, occupation, and work experience. Held in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taiwan, New York, Los Angeles and Germany (starting in 2020), the examinations consist of writing, tasting and short essay held on the same day. The procedure of sake tasting is based on wine tasting in terms of appearance, aroma and taste and the terminology of sake is made as much as possible to have much in common with that of wine to share the sense of tasting globally. The diploma also focuses on pairing of sake and shochu with food overseas. It would be a perfect qualification if you want to promote sake and shochu to the world where wine is better known.
