KURA MASTER is a sake contest for French people, which was established in France in 2017. Most of the entries are junmai-shu. In the 2020 contest, there will be 6 categories in total, which are Junmai, Junmai-Daiginjo, Sake Sparkling, Yamadanishiki, Omachi and Dewa Sansan (the last three are the types of sake rice). They are evaluated based on points. The top sakes are awarded Gold Medals and Platinum Medals. Among the Platinum Medals, there are Kura Master Jury Prize awarded by the jury and President Prize awarded by the jury president.
The jury, made up of food specialists in France, including top sommeliers and those involved in restaurants, hotels and cooking schools, carry out blind tastings. The important thing is not just the taste, flavor and color, but also a good paring of food and drinks, which represents French food culture.
The KURA MASTER executive committee introduces sake in various ways, such as holding sake workshops, visiting sake breweries and experiencing a paring of food and sake. It also arranges a business meeting and translators for each sake brewery booth during the contest. Thus, KURA MASTER is gathering attention that it has a strong influence on expanding the sake market not only in France but also in the world.
