The National Research Institute of Brewing (NRIB)The former National Research Institute of Brewing (NRIB) was a national institute of brewing laboratory founded in 1904 under the control of the Ministry of the Treasury in Takinogawa, Kita-ku, Tokyo, for the purpose of scientific research, promotion and development of brewing techniques. It became under the control of the National Tax Agency in 1959, and then was relocated to Higashi Hiroshima City in 1995 with the name changed to the present NRIB. In 2001, NRIB became an independent administrative agency. In 2014, its building (red brick brewery/Tokyo office) in Takinogawa was designated as an important cultural property. Setting the primary goal as the suitable and fair imposition of liquor taxes, NRIB is committed to the analysis and evaluation of liquor, and the development and improvement of such analysis and evaluation, in order to promote the sound development of the liquor industry. Also, for the quality assessment of liquor, it holds sake awards jointly with the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association, such as the Annual Japan Sake Award, and supports the relevant screen panels. It releases results of researches, examinations and patent applications regarding liquor and the relevant industry, and collects, organizes and offers information to disseminate the results. It not just makes research collaboration and accepts researchers globally and domestically and holds a lecture for manufacturers and distribution companies while solving their technical problems, but also gives lectures for and advice to consumers in order to increase the awareness of the people.
